A strong hierarchy places administrative roles at the top with distinct colors and clear badges (like 👑 ⸝⸝ Owner), followed by moderation, community boosters, VIPs, and finally general member ranks. The higher a role is on the list, the more permissions it should logically have.
In your Discord server settings, go to Roles, select a role, and check the box that says "Display role members separately from online members". This allows users with that role to appear in their own grouped section on the right-hand sidebar.
Servers that reach Level 2 Server Boosts can upload custom image icons for roles. If your server is not boosted, using Unicode symbols (like ✦ or 🛡️) directly in the role name provides a free, highly aesthetic alternative.
Keep it simple. You need an Admin/Owner role, a Moderator role, perhaps a VIP/Booster role, and a default Member role. Adding dozens of color roles or niche title roles can make permissions difficult to manage and creates clutter.
In the Discord Role settings, you can assign a HEX color code to any role. A user's name will appear in the chat using the color of the highest role they possess that has a color assigned.
Yes, role stacking is common. However, remember that permissions are additive in Discord (a user gets all permissions from all their assigned roles). Be extremely careful not to assign a cosmetic role that accidentally grants moderation permissions.
